What is Vedic Panchang?
Panchang is a sanskrit word meaning "Five Limbs". It represents the traditional Vedic system of timekeeping based on the positioning of the Sun and the Moon.
The Five Limbs of Time
- Tithi (Lunar Day): Represents the phase of the Moon. Determines spiritual fasting days like Ekadashi or Pradosh.
- Vara (Solar Day): Ruling solar day of the week (Sunday through Saturday), ruled by specific planetary lords.
- Nakshatra (Birth Star): One of the 27 sectors of the ecliptic. Affects temperament, mental state, and compatibility.
- Yoga: Sum of longitude of Sun and Moon. Determines auspiciousness of starting a new project.
- Karana: Half of a Tithi (lunar day). Governs work, actions, and specific business tasks.
